Live will not initialize application before crashing.

So, Live no longer boots up completely on my iMac. After I launch the application, a dialog box will pop up asking me if I want to "Restore Windows" b/c it failed to close properly, and no matter which option I input, the result is the same: 10 seconds of loading, then crashing during the initialization stage.

I ran out of time on the Beta version of 9 (which, along with 8, has always worked fine), so this all started when I tried to download and use the trial version until I can get the money for the upgrade.

I have deleted and re-installed many times (all the versions), and am now at a loss and running out of time for a project.

My setup:

iMac (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB)

Apogee Duet 2

Arturia Analog Player

Any help would be greatly appreciated and rewarded with tons of good interent-karma,

Rick

Thanks for your help Michael. Much appreciated :) Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick. I think I am dealing with a pretty unique situation here. After looking at the crash report, I've noticed a couple things that look odd to me. These lines are those:

Crashed Thread:  0  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000002aff000

    -and-

    Application Specific Information:
    objc[4500]: garbage collection is OFF

Do either of these things jump out at you as disconcerting?

I can confirm this issue. It seems like a licensing problem.

Downgrade to 9.0.1 solved the problem.

Same here; works fine on Mac, but keeps crashing in Windows 7. Live 8 works fine though. Sent several mails to Ableton support, but no response yet...

There are a couple of things I would try. (do not delete anything unless you know it is corrupt or causing the problem, which you will figure out by the end of this)

First of all, have you tried booting with the 32 bit if it is 64 and vice versa? (you can have both installed at the same time)

Second, if that does not work, try moving the crash files and preferences located in your library folder. Be careful, there are 2 of these. To access the correct one, you should go to the bar above the finder window, to the Go tab. Click on it, then hold option, and an option called Library will pop up. Click on that Library and navigate to Preferences > Ableton > Live 9.0.1 and find your crash folder. In this crash folder, you should see a few (or maybe just one) als files along with an undo history for each.

From here's I'm not sure if you should just leave the crash folder and move the files to the desktop or the whole folder or if it even matters. Try any of those options.

    Try Launching.

Next, if this does not work, go to Applications > Ableton Live 9 _ > contents > App-Resources > Versions and move the file named Default Live Set.als to your desktop, or just somewhere else. Try booting. This should allow you to at least hit no if the previous option did not work.

    Good Luck. Post back.

The kernal protection failure does. I would definitely test/check out your RAM. I've had problems like that before where my entire computer will just shut down because of bad RAM especially when I am moving things around or starting up memory intensive apps. That's just my thought.

Hey folks, my machine was being extra dongy and doing this too, this helped on my end:

    Go to /Library/Audio/Midi Drivers/

Delete any old midi drivers you are currently not using (for me it was some old NI midi driver, and a few others random bits for Line-6, RME devices, etc.).

For safe-keeping I made a folder and archived the old drivers so i could keep around something potentially important if I accidentally deleted it, I would recommend doing this as well in case this doesn't fix the problem for you.

    Hi all,

It's important to understand that serious issues such as crashes can be caused by a wide variety of reasons. Therefore, the best practice in these cases is getting in touch with our Support directly so we can address the issues you are experiencing on an individual basis. I am locking this thread in order to prevent confusion - please also see this question on Answers for more guidelines on how to use the platform:
