Live 9 browser issues

I don't get any entries in the right pane of live 9's browser when I click on "sounds". All other tabs work as they are supposed to, however. Also, when adding folders to "places", sometimes they work and sometimes they also come up empty. Has anyone else encountered any similar problems?

The new browser is a serious problem. All of my handmade and purchased instruments and racks/presets are buried in Live 8 Library/Presets. This is where my previous (live8) library; it's not integrated with the new (live9) library.

I figure this is not the way the Ableton folks wanted their new browser to go down. There are lots and lots of issues with it. Hopefully, there will be an official set of fixes soon!!

If you are on Windows, try this:

Go to your Windows "Temp" directory and delete the "index-args.txt" file. I was just instructed to try this by Ableton and it fixed the problem. When I looked at the timestamp of the file, it was dated March of 2013 which was right around the time I installed the beta version of Live 9. Might be connected to that.

    C:\Windows\TEMP\index-args.txt

A new "index-args.txt" file will be created after you launch Live 9.

The browser was working fine for me until today; now nothing shows up in the browser content pane except for vsts. No instruments, no effects, none of the folders of samples I have added. I mean, they're all listed on the lefthand side, in "categories" and "places," but clicking on them doesn't make anything show up in the righthand content pane except vsts.

When I load up my old live sets, the instruments and effects load into the sets fine, though. I just can't add anything new or begin new sets with anything but vsts.

I'm using Live 9 Lite, v. Version 9.1.4, 32 bit, on Windows 7 (64 bit).  And obviously I'm not going to consider upgrading unless I can get this fixed!

Yesterday ableton was working fine for me, all of my samples, instruments, effects, etc. were all working as normal and today I tried adding in a new sample folder under my places tab, after I did that none of my instruments, audio effects, or midi effects had any presets and all of my samples were missing out of my personal folders and packs.. I could still open live sets and they would play as normal but everything in the browser was still missing.. I was messing around with it all morning and finally got everything to show up again by going to my task manager (control, alt, delete), went into processes and ended the process "Ableton Live 9 Suite.exe" and "Ableton Index.exe" after I did that I opened Live and everything seems to be in its right place again. Hopefully that's the last I'll see of that problem but as of now everything is working fine again.

    Hey Guys,

I have been making sets and tracks all year and had not run into this until today. I hit the same problem you have been describing, and like most of you I was getting that sick feeling in the stomach. But Keep Calm and Make Music, I have a solution.

    Specs:

MAC OS X Yosemite Ver. 10.10.1

    Ableton Live 9.1.7 Build: 2014-12-12_411c6f8237 64-bit

Defect: Met with a pop up (missed a screenshot) that said there was an error and that the application needed to restart. At this time my folders became empty and navigating between them produced no change.

After the application restarted, Ableton performed a scan on the core library.

After that scan was finished the folders were still empty. (freaking out)

    Symptoms:

    1. User Folders are Empty in the Left Hand Places Section.
    2. Selecting different folders shows none of the contents.
    3. Sets are still playing the samples.

Solution: What worked for me, and not right away, was:

    1. Removing the broken folders from the Places Section
    2. Selecting +Add Folder
    3. Select the appropriate folders that contain your samples, or presets.
    4. Select Open

It should be mentioned that the files did not appear immediately. In fact certain folders would appear, be empty, non selectable, all those scary feelings.

After a restart and about 30 minutes the folders began showing up, again some of them were still empty. As time progressed the samples and presets began to appear.

The folders are now fully restored, and the samples are all selectable, and user is able to preview the samples as normal.

I am unsure of what is happening in the background and this solution may not work for you. This is just what happened to work for me. I hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    -Andy

Partly figured out: initially I installed Live 9 to a folder on a second hard drive rather than the default location.  Uninstalled and reinstalled to the default location now "sounds" works great!

Still not recognizing some folders when using "add folder" to places however.

I have a massive library of samples, instruments and drum racks I've collected and built.

The only way I seem to be able to find them is under "Live 8 Library".

CMD-F doesn't yield any useful results.. just lame synthy operator patches.

I thought Live 9 suite would come with a pile of new sounds and instruments.

Can't even find this "convolution reverb" i'd like to check out.

Until I get the browser working, the money was wasted on the Live 9 upgrade.

My Ableton Index .exe has stopped working, I uninstalled Live 8, does this have anything to do with it? Also I migrated ALL of my libraries and packs to my custom folder on another hd..

it's really disorientating, when you know you have just saved a loop, sound or something into the project you're working on and Live won't show it unless you restart the programme, grrr

I too cannot access any of my own sounds (wav, aiff, rex) from any of the folders that I add to the "Places" area of the left sidebar. The first folder will be added but nothing will show in the "Name" area upon clicking on the folder I added. I've tried a couple of things already that didn't work, like renaming my Preferences.cfg file and entire database folder/restarting Live 9.0.6. I also shut off my anti-virus software, made sure all my file extensions were showing, dragging folders over that ONLY contained .wav files, I mean I tried EVERYTHING.

I even uninstalled/reinstalled Live 9, also removed the version 8 beta (64-bit) and no luck. I noticed also that when I add my sound content hard drive which is installed internally on a 10k RPM hard drive, Live does not scan it. If I add a folder, and then drag and drop the same files in the folder from the Explorer window directly on the folder I added in Places, I get copies of those same wav files and THOSE will show up with "copy of..." prefixing each file name. Why will it show those but not the originals? Very, very odd behavior indeed.

The browser worked great in previous versions up until 9. It seems to have broken with the update. If I click "Show in Explorer" I can certainly browse the secondary drive that holds all my sounds, but that's hardly ideal. I really need to be able to preview and have quick access to everything as before.

    I'm using Windows 7 64-bit with 16 GB RAM and Live 9.0.6

I did send an email to support but it's been a few days.

    @Hypermind

what would be the benefit of doing this over just deleting the greyed out folder and adding it again? This is what I do when the problem arises.

Hypermind - you still out there? I'm getting the same problem with 9.1.2...adding even the smallest folder and yet nothing shows on the right hand side of the browser. It's all in explorer however and will load from there. Support are helping me but I just came across this post.....Ive done everything posted above including killing the indexer, clean install, register clean up, everything!

This is annoying! I am uninstalling Ableton Live 9 Suite (32bit) on Windows 7 (64 bit), and going to install the 64 bit version. When I put files on a folder and I add that folder in Live's browser it shows only the folder's name, without any content. And I can't stand this stress anymore. I will try the 64 bit version (though I won't be able to use a lot of 32 bit plugins anymore), and if it is the same, I don't know... Please fix the browser!! Thank you.
