Importing .wav files to master, I'm getting artifacts in sound. Why?

I'm loading some .wav files of songs to be mastered into Ableton Live 8.  I've done this many time with no trouble.  These are good files and sound fine when played straight off the disc or downloaded from the disc.

This time I've been getting artifacts in the sound.  Tracks don't play smoothly, one track in particular sounds like it has a breathing compressor on it at the fade out.  No plugins are inserted.

I play these same tracks in the itunes player and they sound fine.

I've tried both the drag and drop method and the copy and paste method.  Doesn't make a difference.

Also sometimes when I load them in they play at 120 bpm instead of their original tempo.

Any ideas?

    Hi there,

The artifacts you are hearing probably originate from Live's audio warping, depending on the nature of the audio file and the warp mode chosen.

If you don't want the tempo of the imported files to adapt to the session tempo, you might want to disable warping completely anyway for imported files.

You can do so via Live's preferences -> Record / Warp / Launch. Please make sure that "Auto-Warp long Samples" is set to "off", and when you import an audio file bigger than a one shot sample, it will not be warped anymore.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks David.  After I posted this I did more research and found out about the warping.

    That was exactly the fix.
