How to fix ReWire in Ableton, on Live start-up I get a ReWire warning saying it's disabled?

Recently when I open Ableton Live 8, Windows 7 64 bit OS, I get a warning stating "An error has occurred while opening the ReWire system. ReWire will not work properly." I've never actually implemented the ReWire but I accidentally opened FL10 Studio  while in Live and I think that messed something up. Before I would see a "Fruity Loops" option in the boxes in each track but that is now gone and I get that annoying message every time I open Ableton. I'd like to know if it's possible to fix this. I thought possibly reinstalling Ableton but I have a lot of money sunk into your Instruments like Operator, Amp, Drums and Analog and other 3rd party VST's and I'd rather not uninstall and reinstall if there's another way to fix this. I'm a huge Ableton user and customer and this is my first issue. It's just annoying in the Studio, especially when I have people in. I like everything to run clean and nice and this is really bugging me. I know Ableton is the best and I want to get this fixed but I need a hand.

Got the same problem (Ableton Live 8, Windows 7 64 bit) after once closing Live without even having any ReWire application active. At the next Live startup I got the error message.

Restarting Live with or without ReWire apps (ReBirth in my case) did not fix the issue. ReWire now doesn't work.

    Any hints?

I don't use any rewire software but have the same problem since a couple of days ago. It keeps bugging me because every time I run live(8.3.1, XP) that rewire error message pops up. I would understand if I use rewire function with another DAW but Having this problem all of sudden:(

Had the same problem occurring suddenly, even though I'm not using any ReWire applications. A re-boot won't fix it. Perhaps it has to do something with an automatic update of Live that hasn't exactly worked as planned.

Anyway, I found a solution by either a) or b):

    a) Download the latest update/install file from Ableton and reinstall it. You can download the Program Only version and install it on top of your existing installation. Even if your system shows you're running 8.3.1. you need to download the 8.3.1. version from Ableton and re-install it. You won't need to re-authorize and your existing settings won't be changed.

    b) If you plan to never use ReWire, you can disable Live's ReWire master functionality by modifying an Options.txt file at Live's preferences folder. This hack is of course less than optimal if you one day end up setting up a ReWire application as well. But if you need to fix the problem now and can't dowload the update file, then just add the following to a text file named Options.txt and save it at the Preferences folder of Live:

    -ReWireMasterOff

I was having this issues and this was where google led me so I'm posting my solution. I am running OSX Mavericks and Ableton 8.4.1. There are issues with 8.4.1 (And I assume previous versions) on mavericks. As of this writing 8.4.2 is in beta and you can get it here: https://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=182077

Hope that helps someone find a solution a little faster.

I had this problem after uninstalling Max for Live. The error went away after I started Live and then Reason as a ReWire slave. Shutting them both down resolved the problem and Live starts normally now! Don't know if this will work for everyone though.

Had the same problem after Live automatically updated from 8.3 to 8.3.1.

Like XSIMan described, after downloading the 8.3.1 installer package and replacing my Live installation, everything seems to work fine again!

    on MacOS 10.8 :

    1) Quit Ableton Live

    2) delete Rewire file from Library on your startup disk, and Rewire Engine from Propellerheads folder there (if exists)

    3) Launch Ableton Live - it will reinstall the correct rewire engine.

    No more pop-ups, enjoy ;)

I believe this can happen if another ReWire application is still running. Are you sure Fruity Loops has closed out entirely?

Generally if a ReWire slave-capable application opens after a ReWire host-capable application is open, the second program attempts to start ReWire as the slave. I suspect Fruity Loops attempted to open as a slave and something went wrong. Have you rebooted?

Some people may not of noticed that Live updated itself the other day which is buggy.

This rewire error is because the 8.3.1 update is buggy. Download the entire  Live 8.3.1 Software only Install  and install that over Live this will fix it.
