How to drag and drop files from Windows explorer into Live 8.2.8

Hi All,

I am pretty sure I used to be able to drag audio files from Windows Explorer etc. directly into Live. For some reason when I try now, the cursor turns into a circle with a line through it and doesn't let me drag and drop. Has the feature been removed, turned off or did I just dream about the functionality in the first place?

Any help appreciated.

Jake

No, it still works fine here. (Windows 7, latest version of Live)
Try loading those samples from Live's filebrowser. At least that will work :)

If you've set Live to run as administrator (in the shortcut's properties, or just by right-clicking) that could be the reason.  In general, you can't drag and drop files from Explorer into apps that are running as administrator because Explorer doesn't run as administrator—you'll see this same behavior from all (or nearly all) apps.  You might have done this to try to work around problems with a buggy VST or something.

To check your shortcut's settings (Windows 8/8.1):

    1. Open the Start menu
    2. Right-click the Ableton Live shortcut
    3. Click Open file location
    4. Right-click Ableton Live in the window that appeared
    5. Click Properties
    6. Click Advanced
    7. Uncheck Run as administrator
    8. Click OK, then OK

I use a JBridge to load some 32 Bit Plugins and have to run JBridge as administrator for it to work. Any way to work around the Drag and Drop issue

Ok figured it out wonder if other people were having the same problem... I was trying to drag it just anywhere in the track, but you need to drag it specifically in between channels and the cursor will turn from the stop sign to an arrow

See TravisSpomer's post near the top - It's a Windows thing rather than an Ableton thing. A workaround is to add the directory that you frequently import samples/tracks from to your 'Places' section of the Ableton sidebar

Yes I have the same problem. One day I could drag tracks, the next, I couldn't. I have played around a bit and found the comment by mcbpete to be the best answer. I'm a little frustrated that there seems to be some incompatibility with windows, it is after all a major player in the software industry.
