Files are missing in many of my projects

All of my Ableton projects are saved on an external drive (G).  A few weeks ago a thumbdrive was plugged into what should have been been called (F) but it changed (G) to (F) and called itself (G).

After that Ableton could not find any of my projects.  It was looking for external drive (G) which was now called (F).

The only fix I could find was to do a system restore.  That fixed that problem.

But now when I open most projects many of the files are missing.  It says sample offline.

I've tried drag and drop and copy and paste. Neither works.  I've also tried the missing media files search but it doesn't find them.

They are all still listed in the workspace drop downs.

Any ideas what's going on here?

    Hi there,

Please have a read into this article, dealing with scenarios where missing files could occur:

In case Live does not automatically replace samples, you might want to check out this article as well:

Hey David, thanks for the help, but...

When I go to user\(username)\   there is no appdata option.  I'm using Windows 8.

Do you think it would help to unplug the external drive then plug back in?  Maybe even uplug the power from the external drive as well.  Kind of like a re-set.

    Hi there,

On some systems the folder is invisible, you can make it visible following the steps outlined here:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/zxue/archive/2012/03/08/win8-howto-19-show-hidden-files-folders-and-drives.aspx

    Hope it helps.

I went to the folder options and checked make files visible.  I found preferences, opened that and looked for the way to create the text file.  All I could find was "new text document".  I clicked that and named it "Options.txt"  When I clicked that it opened notepad.  I typed "-_RelaxFileManagerSearch".  Nothing happens after that.

I open Ableton and still does not find the files.

I suspect I'm not creating that text file correctly, but I don't know.

    Hi onguitar,

Please send a status report ( help -> get support ) to our support staff, they can check whether the options.txt file is read correctly.

    Best regards,

Hi David, sorry to be computer tech ignorant but what do you mean by "send a status report" to support?  What will they be checking? And what is a status report?

Here's what I had to do to get to preferences.  users\mike\appData\Roaming\ableton\live8.4.2\Preferences

Once there I created a text document called Options.txt.  I clicked on that, notepad opened and I typed in -_RelaxFileManagerSearch

    Nothing happened after that.
