Are there any good resources for learning Max for Live?

Whenever I open up a Max patch I get totally confused, and I just don't understand the Max interface. Are there any recommended tutorials, books, or online courses I can take to learn Max and Max for Live?

The tutorials that are built into the Max application are the #1 place to start. When you press the edit button and open a device the Max application opens as a separate app. While Max is in focus go to the Help tab in the menu bar. From there you will see options like "Max Help," "What's New in Max 5?" and "Max For Live."

If you're completely new to Max, then choosing the Max Help option is the way to go. The window that will open has all of the introductory information you need including links to the Max, MSP, and Jitter tutorials. You will want to start with the Max tutorials as those give you the bare bones basics for how to work with Max.

You may be tempted to skip through the tutorials – RESIST THE URGE TO SKIP THE TUTORIALS!! The Max tutorials are some of the best software documentation that exists for any program and taking the time to go through them carefully will actually save you more time in the long run.

    Good luck and have fun!

this web page is incredibly deep.  the team at C74 just make their pages appear to be sparse with their minimalistic design ethos.

when starting out don't be afraid to shamelessly steal from help files and other peoples' creations.  even advanced users copy and paste from help files.  be careful to not cut from help files, if you do, you need to re-install max/msp.

The one thing which I deem totally essential to learning Max for Live (besides the obvious Max basics) is getting a good understanding of the so called Live Object Model, see:

    http://cycling74.com/docs/max5/refpages/m4l-ref/m4l_live_object_model.html

This model represents all the different parts within Ableton Live which you can access, manipulate or sometimes change to match your own preferences. The chart may look daunting at first but once you grasp the structure you'll have no problems navigating and accessing all these parts within Live.

I'd also like to say that the cycling 74 forums are superb as well. Generally if you have a question either someone has already asked it or people will be good enough to help you out.

^all great answers. While these are specific to Max, the fundamentals are really important and well laid out: http://www.youtube.com/user/BazTutorials
