Added max for live devices don't appear in my Live browser - please help...

I'm adding Max for Live devices to my Ableton Library folder but they don't show up within Live in the browser in Max for Live category. I'm putting them in <my home foler>->Library->Application Support->Ableton->Library->Presets->Audio Effects->Max Audio Effects

When I re-open Live, they don't show up. Any help greatly appreciated. I've spent way too much time on this already :)

If they're third party m4l devices you have to put them in your user library rather than the core library.

On a Mac this is located in: Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Music/Ableton/User Library

    On a Pc: \Users\[username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library

(note You can also specify a custom location for the User library in the 'Library' tab of Preferences/Settings so check what location is listed there first)

If it's anything like the PC version you may have to wait a few seconds for Ableton to rescan/rebuild the database so it'll be populated in your search

    Thanks for the answer.

    I am on a mac and I put them in HD/Users/[username]/Music/Ableton/User Library/Presets/Audio Effects/Max Audio Effect/PB_MonsterTimeStretch.amxd

to abide by the path that Ableton uses for max devices.

    This doesn't work either.

Handily I know that plugin file name so know that it's actually an Max Instrument rather than an effect :) (It's essentially like a version of simplified Sampler but with a large timestretch range). So look in your 'Max Instruments' section instead !

Thanks again mcbpete. I put it in instruments in both locations and it still doesn't show up.

Mmm, running short on ideas now....

You could also maybe look in the User Library section in the Places section. Here you can see I've put the time stretch device in the User Library / Max For Live / PointBlank folder:

    http://www.ilovecubus.co.uk/pete/timestretch.png

Ableton doesn't really care what the folder structure is as long as it's in the User Library folder, I tend to sort my Max devices by company name if I have a lot of them by the same author as it makes it easier to find (though it automatically also gets entered into the Max for Live section under Max Instruments). Note also the little circle by the text saying 'Places', this is it building up the database so you can later find any device, sound, clip etc. by pressing CTRL F (CMD F on Mac) irrespective of where it's located.

If it's still showing that then it might still be building up the search database and why it's not being displayed in the right location.

thanks so much! I think I finally figured out what's going on. Novicely, I didn't realize the User Library location was specified in the Preferences and I had previously reassigned that to an external hard drive. I appreciate all your answers and learned a lot from them. I see when I added it to the correct User Library location, the spinning circle came on to rebuild the database. Thanks so much!! Seems that rebuilding takes a long time! Been running for about 10 minutes so far...

Glad it's sorted, yes it can sometimes take quite a while if a user library is moved from one drive to another. This should only happen the first time it's rebuilt though, any further files added to the user library should only take a few seconds to get added to the database.
