Portishead is a TRIPHOP group.
A day without House Music isn't the end of the world but is so damn close.

Portishead are actually a folk group. Serious; listen to the song structures and arrangements...

I didn't say I was a fan of that label either, nor Bristol sound like all of the bands of that time and location were generic copies. However, like Britpop and other generic terms of the time, that is what many people refer to them as.

And yes, folk music - with beats and strings.

hip hop is not a genre of music, hip hop is a lifestyle with 5 elements. break dancing, rapping, graffiti, turntablism and beat boxing. this shit bugs me almost as much as 'your' in place of you're.

good times when all this came about ~93-95, acid/mushroom jazz was in the same scene, it was all amazing when it first came out, lots of cool clubs and mellow chilled out scenes during those summers. wish I could remember any of it.

thank got Portishead didn't post a pic of their latest shit, people would criticize the corn content and saltiness.

to me portishead is much more like cabaret or torch song music set to hip hop beats. the painful, melancholy song content, the slow breathy, smoky vocal approach. its all there.

the new album has been washed in heroin and dried out on a dead junky's back (probably a hooker) that got lost in the woods in northern scotland.

I bet you're a southerner, at least on the Uk Isles.

for all those that don't like thier last (very unlike Hip Hop) album, check out these:

Liars
TV on The Radio
White Circle Crime Club
Spacemen 3

and last but very certainly not least:

The Silver Apples

I like hiphop
and I like portishead. I think they are a hiphop group. if you really listen they can only be. i also think that the 5 elements definition of hiphop is true but that it does not end there and even though notable hiphop alumni such as krs-one will give tonedeft's response, I believe that they only said that for white american media, as an avenue for being all inclusive, otherwise many folk would have been left out (which is never good). I believe outside of white american media that people such as krs believe there is genre of music called hiphop.
I also believe that tv on the radio is a hiphop group, some of you might understand me. if portishead were a hiphop group, what would they sound like? I think they would sound just like they do sound, there for a hiphop group they are.

but if they were a rock, electronic, reaggae, jazz or other group they would sound different. Do you know what i mean.
