L6/7 - Groove IS possible! (sort of...)

maybe this is known to some of you already, but i only just discovered that the arrange page's master automation lane has a 'global groove amount' selector. After some playing around with it, i managed to get a half-decent groove going by drawing in automation.

Image

just start with a simple 16th beat pattern, loop it, and start drawing in the shuffle amount in 8th note blocks. when you're happy with it, duplicate the automation across the length of the song.

here's a quick example i made so you can get the gist:

first bit straight, second but 'grooved'

like said, its not perfect - you're only actually swinging it in varying amounts - but some good results can be achieved, and unlike the 'master tempo clip' method, you're free to alter the tempo.

What happens when you do groove quantize? Is it the same as adding swing?

Never done much groovin' myself. Apart from playing unquantized. But this I'm gonna try.

i tend to find that working unquantised provides much better results when working with beats but this is a handy technique when you work an individual track loop - then export and import back in to the non grooved project.
