And don't you have a volume slider when you insert a virtual instruments on a MIDI Track?You've got a problem with that too?Why it should be different for external gear?

In Live, you use MIDI learn to assign any CC to a volume slider. Note "Volume Slider".
If you place an instrument on a midi track, then you get a volume slider.
If there is no instrument, then it just sends out MIDI which doesn't need a volume slider. How loud is a note with the velocity of 127 minus 2 dB?
You just got some concepts mixed up.
If you want CC7 to automatically be assigned to the volume sliders, then use automapping.

which viewed from a certain perspective might not make sense, but in this case I can see why he wants it
to me it brings up a bigger picture, which is that often you don't need the "standard" controls on a track, and wouldn't it be interesting to be able to map them to other things on that track.
IOW, you don't need pan on this track = make the pan knob control some parameter in a plugin on that track instead = now you can control that parameter from a control surface without entering some sub-menus
sounds like it could be not just a Live solution, but require some tweak of the mackie control?? but maybe could be accomplished by "tricking" the controller in Live

Problem:
With a BCF2000 in MackieControl mode, no volume/velocity fader automation possible on midi tracks without instruments (external midi out gear).
Solutions:
1.(not for me)Use the External Instruments Ableton device plug (wich is nice) and route the audio of my external gear in my soundcard (but I don't have enough audio input to map each separate midi channel)
2.(for me).Forget the Mackie emulation and then use a Velocity plug on each track with a proper midi cc (7 or what Smile ever)
3.wait for Live 8
4. Assign CC 7 for the corresponding MIDI Channel to ANY parameter in Live (call it a Dummy Knob) and setup "Remote" output. Then moving that parameter in Live will send out a CC message to your hardware.
In theory you could place an audio track next to your MIDI track (or anywhere) or use an unused return track volume slider.

1) you're mixing up audio and MIDI. When you add an instrument on a MIDI track, the track is automatically changed in an instrument track, with an audio output and an audio fader.
2) using MIDI mappings is not the same as using a fader in the track.
