Hey whats up. I'm gonna be teaching a music production/technology course at an arts highschool coming up in the fall. I want to build a forum so that students can post pictures, bio, mp3's etc, and comment on and have people comment on their original works. It seems that I can get it done with the ableton prototype forum which of course is the standard for many other companies and forums. Does this cost money to do this? What if I wanted to start one from scratch? Help me build a dope-ass forum!

Thanks for all the help!

phpbb is good, but can be a lot to maintain and administrate, especially if you're dealing with students and constantly need to moderate what is going on in the forum. You should also consider maybe creating a blog with user profiles and permissions so that your students can create their own posts, or just add replies to your posts. The one I use is wordpress, but there are plenty of other blog apps around. As my web lecturer told me, there is nothing worse than an unused forum. A blog might be on a smaller scale, but if it looks like there is more going on, people will be more encouraged to interact.
