PadKontrol: question regarding Pads with Live

Post by DJLethalRush » Tue Jul 25, 2006 8:20 am

can you set the touch pads so that when you hit one it deactivates a previous touch pad? I want to control an array of drumloops in Live with touch pads, so that when I hit a pad it glows red, then when I hit another pad, which will
replace the playing loop, that pad glows red and the other pad deactivates?

this might be automatic through control surface feedback.

thanks.

I dont know what kind of toutch pads you are using but they probably do nothing more than send midi notes to ableton.

I do this by stacking audio clips (loops) on top of each others in an audio track (session view).
I then map individual notes from my keyboard to each of those audio clips.

Punching a note on the keyboard stops whatever is currently playing since only one clip per track is allowed to play at one time. The wanted audio clip is launched according to quantization and you are groovin again.

Hope this helps.

You can't get the pads to stay lit as far as I know.

But, it is great with "legato mode" and all your mapped clips in the same channel. Hella wikid.

yes you can - toggle mode. the problem is triggering those toggles from the outside. If you could do that... well... let's just say I'd get a couple more :-)

just reading up on this a bit: The PadKONTROL supports native mode... Time for some max-hacking, I think!

yeah I wished you could make the pads behave the way that they are glowing when you toggle on, and then stop glowing when you toggle off. but korg didnt really think of using the illumination of the pads in a intelligent way.
they are just glowing to "look cool", like the manual says.
cheers

Might be helpful? Check the first message

Depense if when your pad controller receives a note event, do they light up?
Else build yourself a midio128:http://www.ucapps.de/midio128.html

excuse my english. I'll try again:
the pads should give me visual feedback for a on/ off kind of status.
like in toggle mode you press a pad, it illuminates and stays glowing, till you press it again, then it stops glowing. like for example a solo button.
would be very nice. also if it glows as long as a loop plays, and you stop it, it stops glowing... you understand?

you need a monome for that.. i had a look at the manual for the korg, and its pretty limited. there is a toggle mode, but no real visual feedback for the toggle mode. also, there is no listing for the LED's in the midi implementation chart. maybe a future OS update will make this all possible?

When the pads receive a midi note they blink, instead of being lit until they receive the corresponding note off.

Same thing with the pads themselves: even in toggle mode the lights on the pads don't toggle at all. They just.. blink.

Other users are backing this up.
I've posted a message on the Korg forum complaining about this:
http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=17337

-please back us up there, so we can have a new firmware version that works for what we need. Even if you're just considering getting the PadKONTROL this is worth figthing for a bit.

I'm happy that I'm not alone with this. I replyed in the korg forum.
the lights should

1. toggle
2. stay on as long as you press them
3. stay on till you press the pad a second time (this is for live clips in toggle mode, wich means the padkontrol should not be in toggle mode but the lights should....äh- right?)

cheers

Good thoughts...

The potential to offer actual performance enabling feedback rather than just eye candy is staggering with these pads. It's a shame that Korg didn't think through the capability they had...
