Just out of curiosity, I sorted the memberlist by number of posts, then listened to the music for the top 20 or so posters who have music online.

Someone please educate me or point me to a site to explain the styles of music I heard. I'm fairly average, and a great deal of what I'm hearing, while intersting, defies any kind of understanding on my part.

This isn't to say it isn't good, or that I don't like it. I find it fascinating, but I have no idea where it evolved from, what it's roots are and such.

Some of it seems ambient, while some definately has a dance-oriented feel, and a lot of it is...I dunno. Experimental?

Anyone care to share?

Quite a few Live-users seem to specialise in what some of us like to call Mensa Dance, aka Shite.

this really leads itself to a much larger question of where any music 'comes from'....

i definately think that your 'tools' influence the output of your music, so the everyone in this forum is influenced by the nature of 'Live'...and this is what we have in common.... but then there are each of our own musical aesthetics and experiences that impact also....

so.... it's a bit hard to give a definate answer to 'what type' of music people create here... everyone is different....

Thanks Gyro (and others).

Yes, I know no one likes to be pigeon-holed, but in order to describe a piece to people, you need to relate it to something.

So based based on the guide Gryo pointed me at (and I have no idea how accurate that guide is) the majority of what I'm hearing here is in the "IDM" category, specifically in the "Glitch" and "Experimental" sub-genres. There's a good deal of ambient-esque, and dark, gloomy stuff too.

Not everything of course...just what I'm running into a lot.

I did find the description "Mensa Dance" worth a chuckle.

An Additional question: The Ishkur site the Gyro linked to is entertaining and interesting.

Does anyone know of any other site like that? Maybe with differing opinions?

yeah, but you need to take a test, so that we can figure out if you have a BPM of over 135
