Choose any drum kit with a single clip!

Post by hambone1 » Fri Sep 16, 2005 1:23 pm

Here's a workaround for the lack of patch selection in Impulse.

Basically, I've set up a 'grid' of 16 drums kits with 8 pads each. When I whack on one of the 8 drum pads, the IAC driver diverts that MIDI note on to the appropriate sample. There are 8 samples in each scene, so each scene makes up a drum kit.

Now to switch to another kit, just activate a pitch device. Transposing +1 will access Kit 2, +2 Kit 3, etc. Either let the kit choose itself when you launch the scene, or assign a MIDI or keymap to it.

My last problem is how to make sure all of the pitch shifts are off before turning one on. For this system to work, only 1 of the 15 pitch shifters can be on at a time. If there's a way to make sure they're all off before launching the new clip, that would work.

If anyone can figure that last one out, let me know!

hey, cool!

How about triggering clips with clip envelopes controlling the pitch offset of a single pitch plugin, instead of turning instances on and off?

I thought I figured it out!

How do I embed the pitch envelope info in the clip?

I've drawn the pitch envelope, but when I trigger the clip, I see the pitch going around the circle on the pitch effect, but the line that actually changes the pitch doesn't move.

I'm probably missing something simple...

the line doesn't change the pitch, iirc. You're doing the right thing :D The "line" represents the center of the bipolar envelope you've drawn. I hope it works.

Here's a little file i whipped up for switching between 4 kits.

I think it's pretty self explanatory

That's brilliant! I've expanded yours for 8 Impulse kits. Far better than my technique, as firing individual clips rather than Impulse pads doesn't allow for velocity.

Eight MIDI buttons can now choose between 8 Impulse kit to play from the drum pads.

Thanks!

Yeah. No problem.
One day we'll be able to load this as one preset

Hambone1 just mailed me the 8 kit adaption.
Which passed beta testing
See... I told it was self-explanatory

So here it is...

I feel nothing but love right now. :D

I dropped in mosca's "impulse-rex-style" set:

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 82&start=0

and I immediately felt "autonomously-fabulous" (pronounced like Andre 3000 might)

Once I finish writing this darn critcal comparison of objectivists vs conventionalists (with regards regards to standards of time) essay, I intend to rip wormholes into time and space with this layout.

I'm not sure quite yet how the two will sync, but I have a feeling it could be done "fantastically-well"!

combine this 8 kit setup with some midi note filtering and pitch fx, and you can effectively switch between 8 different vst plugins...

Make as many kits as you want, and save the whole 8 x 16 clip grid as a Live clip.

Drag one file from the browser on the fly, drop it in the first clip, and instantly access 128 new clips from 8 pads!

...and combine with follow actions to provide automated instrument changes throughout a track: "wait 64 bars, then switch to latin percussion 02", etc.
