MIDI BUG causing latency

Post by Chris J » Fri Sep 16, 2005 11:51 am

Here's the trouble.

AUDIO
As you know when you record audio if you set monitor input to IN or AUTO the resulting recording as a slight offset that you have to manually adjust.
When you set monitor to OFF, the recording is perfect, no adjustment needed.
Great.

MIDI.
Exactly the same thing ie. you have to set monitor input to OFF not to get the annoying offset EXCEPT how the F* are you supposed to hear what you play ?

Why can we get exactly what we're playing (ie without offset) only when monitor is OFF ?

(don't give me "use record quantize", quantize is a groove killer )

Is that with VSTis or with external hardware?

Curious! :?

With external hardware I would hear what I play. (actually maybe not, I've never tried with external, maybe when you set monitor to OFF there's no midi thru ?)

No I mean using live natives or VSTis.

But if you refer to the offset you don't actually need anything.

Just create 2 MIDI tracks, set one monitor to AUTO and one to OFF, Use a click as reference and record both at the same time and compare.(obviously you need to trust your timing precision )

You can actually see that in real time if you watch the clip you record in clip view,
if it's set to AUTO you'll see your notes being written late. if set to OFF you'll see them being written like they should.

Confirmed!

Getting a difference of about 50ms. Strange...

Not shure, but hasn´t that something to do with the global latency?

Therefore you need to do the test described in the manual (wich I don´t have  ) and add the measured offset in preferences.

Just an idea.

But it's note the sound... It's the actual midi note on/off message in the piano roll. That should be spot on - in any case. At least in my way of thinking.
...in the manual (wich I don´t have )
Eehh... What?!? :?

Yes, you´re right, it´s midi itself and not audio generated from a midinote message that´s offset.
Perhaps it´s a bug then, have you tried what happens when changing the global latency?

And yes I´ve no manual because I reinstalled everything due to a broken XP and then never downloaded the L5 release version, I directly started with the new betas wich come without the manual.

Allright!

I do recommend the downloadable PDFs, though! :D

I haven't played around with the global latency. I'll wait for Chris' findings. I'd probably just bury myself in fine tuning...

Cheers,
Mikael

yeah my global latency is all set.
In any case, if I can get my notes where they should be by setting monitor to OFF, I want that also when I set to AUTO because i want to hear what i play and don't want to manually adjust every take I make. Who would want that ???

The latency is for the audio coming out not the midi coming in though.

Thanks but read again, it has no relation to audio. Just the midi without anything plugged in/out.

I'm waiting for Ableton to say something

Thanks Chris, I did.

BTW It only takes two seconds to uncheck PDC to see if it affects your midi timing. My midi timing is affected by PDC.

I had already tried long before posting.

Again, it records notes on/off like it should when set to OFF, meaning IT CAN WORK. There's a bug when set to AUTO or IN

Ableton ?
