Since the semiconductor industry is clearly hitting the wall as far as huge clock frequency jumps, the obvious trend now is to take advantage of parallelism in the form of multi-processor or multi-core processing units.

So this year and next we'll start seeing more and more dual-core processors, and quad will likely follow shortly after.

Ableton... you need to get your skates on here. Live is without a doubt the most power-hungry audio utility I have ever used.. it's embaressing when you see what you get out of Logic, or even Cubase SX these days.

I know we've all heard this before, but I think it's more important now than ever.

Please, please put dual-processor support into Live for the 5.1 release. And please start considering CPU optimizing tweaks also as a valid selling point. I for one will not update to Live 5 until I can see a more optimal Live.

I hear ya, I updated to 5 and have found worse performance for the most part, I like a lot of the new features but I can barely run 4 or 5 clips at once without it bumping over 80% or more! Time for a dual G5 I guess...that will be fun to lug around to gigs..ha.

Working on a track at the moment with a fairly modest plugin count compared with what Logic can handle (using 1 instance of Battery, some hydratones and neodyniums).. and my CPU usage is 80 - 90% in places even with maximum audio buffer size..

All those who want dual processor support say "aye!"

This, given the increased demands of version 5, should've been implemented before release. C'mon Abe's - give us a streamlined 5.1 with multiproc support!

Yeah i'm just looking at building a new pc soon ... very tempted to get a dual core Athlon 64, but only if it will get used properly!

This needs to happen for sure... but the lack of support after all this time says to me that there is some technical reason why this has not been done.

Dual cpu support is needed

Multi threading is an ABSOLUTE MUST.
When I bought version 4, one of the first post I made here was to request multi processor support. I then said I would buy version 5 just to show them my financial support and trust. But that was before I tried v5's demo !!!
Obviously I was able to do A LOT less before reaching unacceptable CPU demands.
Yes it has cool stuff like beat repeat among other things but Freeze is not that glamourous after all. And I thought the initial release was unreasonably unstable.
I certainly understand the need to innovate, but not at the price of loosing that much CPU real estate. I for one don't need new gadgets, I love live for what it already did so well in v4. What I think the users really need are things like MORE cells to Impulse, and a more effective CPU usage.
So yes, we NEED MULTI TREADING SUPPORT NOW.
But it's not the first time on this forum that there is such a request and Ableton always remained silent on the subject. I'm not optimistic, maybe they can't do it, but they just won't say. Come on Ableton there's no way out of this, muti processor is the future. And for a lot of people including me, it's the present.
