Thinking of using a usb2.0 external drive for audio even tho current one is remarkably sufficient, anyone else using usb 2.0 drives?

NOTE MAC USERS: Please check before you test that the Energy Saver settings under System Prefererences/Energy Saver/Options/Processor peformance are optimized. This needs to be set to HIGHEST for any OSX laptop to give a realistic result. This laptop struggled at 88% with setting on: Automatic or Reduced and 43% with Highest. Still too slow IMO, apple need to release a G5 laptop, or ableton could make Live perform better on mac?

In Logic Audio I can even open 58 Platinum verbs on 5 tracks...Never reached that before...MusicXP.net settings...that helped and SP2 increased performance a bit too

I think it's a mixture of both, but if you compare Logic Pro performance you get A LOT more milage out of it than with Live 4.

I fully suspect the new iMac is some kind of indication as to what to expect with a G5 Powerbook. Obviously it's still too big to be a Powerbook, but Apple is proving the technology can be squashed and I'm sure they are developing it now.

spacerboy and amberience seem to be getting very good results with Athlon XP's at 2600 and 2400. One thing in common - they are both running XP SP2. I wonder if thats a factor.

either of you care to comment on any noticable performance boosts since updating to SP2 ?

Indeed - however, it looks like a dual-core G4 might be in the works while IBM takes their time ironing out the mobile G5.

It would feature an onboard memory controller a'la Athlon 64, a much faster system bus, and frequencies upwards of 2ghz. It may be the best option for Apple anyways, as we are still very much living in a 32-bit world.

I've already posted my Apple Powerbook stat's, that's my main Live 4 machine, but today I also ran the test on a desktop G5.

Such a shame there isn't better support for dual CPU. This machine would be seriously smokin! Results still aren't bad at all, but I'll bet Logic would run stellar on your configuration.

do you use asio4all? - my soundcard is a realtek and it runs at 2ms
